The Palm Pré smartphone is currently being sold in the US exclusively by Sprint at $199. That is almost $30 more than the actual cost of the phone. According to a cost analysis done by iSuppli the Palm Pré costs $170 in components. iSuppli did not actually open a Palm Pré to take a look at the components and come up with the production cost of the smartphone. The calculation was based from their own projection of future manufacturing costs for Q2 component pricing and assembly rates.
iSuppli's speculation of the most expensive component of the Pré is the 3.1in, 320 x 480 display which cost around $40. The second coming from the software and licensing which costs about $23. The Pré battery cost $4.16 and the processor is at $10.97. The cheapest component is thought to be the GPS chip which just cost around $1.
Well there you have it. The $170 Smartphone, the Palm Pré.
