President Gloria Arroyo in her State of the Nation Address (SONA) announced that local telecommunications company will reduce their SMS costs to P0.50 per message. This was already confirmed and had already started yesterday as part of a three-month promo.

But despite this promo on SMS, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is still pushing for the reduction on access charges so that the cost of telecommunications services, including SMS and voice calls, in the country will be reduced. However local telecommunications companies are opposing NTC’s long term plan on access charges reduction.

Access or "interconnection" charges are imposed on voice calls and text messages routed from one network to another.

UMobile Invite Code

Posted by JCO | 7/23/2008 07:20:00 PM | | 0 comments »

I checked UMobile's website today to see if there are updates but so far I had already known what I need to know. For those who don't know what or who UMobile is, UMobile is a new player in the cellphone industry and they are offering a virtually free mobile service. How could this be possible? UMobile will offer its services for free in exchange for viewing advertisements on your cellphones. The service is by invite only so not everyone can qualify as a subscriber.

I have 10 invite codes to give away. Just post a comment that you want to be invited and I’ll send an invite. But again the service is available for yuppies. That is you being 15 to 35 years old only.

UMobile is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PLDT unit SMART Communications but will operate independently.

Intel Philippines, Closing

Posted by JCO | 7/21/2008 03:54:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Rumors are circulating that the US chipmaker, Intel, will be closing its plant in the Philippines. The real reason is not really clear as why the company will close its facility in the country but according to Craig Barret, Intel’s chairman, the company considers “political stability” as a major factor when making investment decisions. Considering the current political situation in the country, the president getting its lowest popularity survey that is, there’s no doubt that investors will also have second thoughts of continuing business here in the Philippines.

Intel first opened its manufacturing plant in the Philippines in 1974 in Makati City. Currently it employs about 3,000 employees in its facility in General Trias, Cavite.

The photo frame that we used to see in the living room is now revolutionized and was made digital. A lot of these Digital Picture Frames are already in the market. And most of you might even own one already. But there has been recent news that the Digital Picture Frames, those generic ones that you can buy at stores, are fire hazards.

The products that are made from China are being denied entry in US ports after instances of high rate of spontaneous fires are being reported to have been caused by these frames. These generic picture frames are reportedly manufactured using substandard components. PoGo Inkless Photo Printer

Posted by JCO | 7/14/2008 07:16:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Polaroid is living to its name in making pictures instantly. Way back when digital cameras are still unknown to us, that’s the time when we used the traditional film to capture precious moments, Polaroid was the first name that will cross our minds when in comes to getting pictures instantly. Then comes the digital age wherein there are so many cameras that can choose from which can display your pictures right after you took it. I thought that was the end of Polaroid. We don’t use that camera anymore. But then here comes Polaroid’s Pogo, or Polaroid-on-the-go, a pocket-sized, inkless digital photo printer that produces full-color photos.

PoGo uses Bluetooth (Class 2) OPP USB 2.0 USB A connector, that means you can use your mobile phone in printing using Bluetooth or any other devices that are PictBridge compatible. The photo printer just weighs 8 oz (without paper) including battery. Its dimension is 120mm (4.7”) H X 72mm (2.8”) W X 23.5mm (0.9”) D. It also uses ZINK™ Zero Ink™ Printing Technology that means you just need the paper and no ink at all. Prints are made in 2x3" borderless color images in under a minute.

PoGo was introduced last January and will be available by July.

New iPhone: Unusable

Posted by JCO | 7/14/2008 07:02:00 AM | | 0 comments »

The much awaited launching of the new iPhone 3G last Friday turned out to be a mess after consumers found out that they cannot turn on their new iPhones after purchasing it. The problem was caused by a software glitch in the new phone as what the news says. Also Apple’s iTunes servers are having a global problem, most probably because of the simultaneous release of the new phone in 21 countries last Friday, which prevented the phones from being fully activated.

Apple had much success with its computer line as well as its first generation phones. But what will happen to this not so successful release of the new iPhone? Apple shares fell $4.05, or 2.3 percent, to close Friday at $172.58 amid a general decline in U.S. stocks.

Good thing is it didn't hit the Philippine market yet. Globe Telecom, the sole carrier of iPhone in the country, said that iPhone 3G will not be available in the local market until later this year.

iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.
